When I was in the ninth grade, I invented a new proof concept for a home security system. The system is made of a laser beam that surrounds the house from all sides. If a thief crosses through the laser beam, a shutter will rise from the ground and will stop the thief from escaping. Later, in tenth grade, I invented an accident proof technology which, if implemented in vehicles all around the world, would drastically reduce the amounts of road accidents. This technology has received recognitions from the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and I have received awards from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at the Indian Institute of Management (IIIM) in Ahe Mdabad, in 2008. Even though I've received awards from The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) Committee; the recognition from the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) was my first grand achievement and step towards feeling success.
One day I was at a hospital where I saw a disabled person in a wheel chair, asking for help from a nurse. However, he was finding it difficult to express his feelings to the nurse. I noticed that disabled people always required assistance and because of this, they felt like a burden to other people. To see this happen, really hurt me. So after that trip to the hospital, I thought; "I'm going to invent something that disabled people can use and operate by themselves, without asking for help or assistance. So I started thinking; what is the common point between a disabled person and a normal human being? After some thinking, I found that the brain and breathing are common points. When I was in eleventh grade, I finally invented the proof concept for a Breathing Sensor Apparatus which, when breathed into by disabled people, would assist them in going about their day to day activities. Since I completed the proof, the technology has been recognised by many organisations and has received many awards from places like the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Space Society (NSS), International Space Development Conference (ISDC), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review, Intel, Innovation and Knowledge (INK), Kishore Vaiyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), National Children Science Congress (NCSC) and many others. NIT has filed a patent for this innovation, in my name. As well as this, NIF, Techpedia and the Armaan Foundation are incorporating my technology into a product form and will then help commercialize it.
In 2011, I invented a technology called Low Cost Voice Operated Electrical and Electronics Appliance. It works by saying the name of the electrical appliance, for example light bulb or fan by mentioning its proper time of activation or deactivation, through any cell phone. Again in 2011, I invented a technology, Super Sense Technology. It is a device with which you can operate computers and laptops through slight head or hand movements, without the need to connect a keyboard or a mouse. This technology can benefit normal as well as disabled people. |

I am Susant Pattnaik, a Young Inventor, Social Entrepreneur , Tech Entrepreneur and Serial Entrepreneur from Orissa, India, have invented technologies that are immensely beneficial for the society. Being recognized by national and international organizations, I am continuing my research passionately and aims for the peace and well being of our society especially, the disabled. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Science from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal.
I was born in Bhubaneswar, Orissa and since I was a child, I have been conducting experiments on scientific based projects. Because my childhood was quite boring, I started to research technologies to make my life interesting. I would hack and break electronic gadgets like cell phones and iPods. I would rebuild them with a different design and my own structure. My childhood sparked my desire and passion to be innovative. While others would be playing with their cell phones, I would be dismantling them to discover the scientific principles and mechanisms behind their functioning. I usually didn't get any technical support or help to complete my projects.
I would always dream of giving modern technologies, of my choice, a different look. So in my fifth class, I started my research career. Whenever my Father would buy me new toys, I would immediately break them, do some research and then try to fix them so that they would work as before. Unfortunately, my attempts usually failed and because of this, my Father would scold me. |
